Speech and Oral Language Festival
Every year in Term 3 we celebrate Oral Language by performing speeches to the class and syndicate in the School finals. Year 1’s perform a poem and Year 2 present a prepared speech. From Year 3-6 every student can choose to perform a Prepared speech, Flash talk, Rap or Spoken Word. The winners of the Year 5/6 competition in each category go to the Inner City Speech Finals Competition to represent our school. Ponsonby primary is renowned for its high achievement in our cluster of schools.
Mindplus
At PPS we participate in the Yourschool programme from Mindplus for Year 2-6 students, every Thursday for half a day, for Gifted and Neurodiverse students. This programme builds on Personal Development, Concept Development and Talent Development over the year. This is supported by the Neurodiversity in Education Project.
Thursday Program
This is a weekly programme from Year 3-6 that encourages our school T.R.U.E (Trust, Respect, Understanding Empathy and Excellence) values and STEAM skills through 45 minute sessions. Student agency is enhanced as they need to manage their timetable across the year and book into the sessions themselves. Sessions include:
Using maths and collaboration in a real-world context to follow recipes, hone preparation and cooking skills and create meals.
Improve cycling, swimming and running skills to compete in an annual race. In the colder months, it is Duathlon.
Encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving skills through completing escape room style challenges related to books.
Learn basic Mandarin with an expert teacher.
Improve collaboration skills, design thinking and creativity through lego builds.
Growing student agency and capability to lead sports teams.
Building financial literacy skills.
Encourages problem solving and team work through Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths challenges.
Develops communication and expression while building personal confidence, empathy, and collaborative skills through performance and storytelling.
Fosters cultural identity, belonging, and pride through performances that build teamwork, confidence, and respect for Māori culture and heritage.
Learning about the importance of composting, planting, harvesting and gardening
Grows lifelong learning skills in strategic planning, patience, and emotional resilience through competitive play.
Provide hands-on, interactive environments where students practically apply computational thinking, problem-solving, and algorithmic design to solve real-world problems in line with the Digital Technologies curriculum.

Extension in the Classroom
In class each and every child has the opportunity to be extended. When a school commits to a structured year-level scope and sequence, parents (and teachers) often worry that high-achieving students will get bored. However, both iDeaL (a structured literacy approach structured around the Science of Reading) and Oxford Maths are specifically built to extend advanced learners within their current year-level topics.
Rather than rushing students ahead to the next year’s curriculum (which creates gaps later on), both programs extend students through depth, complexity, and cognitive challenge.

In structured literacy (iDeaL), every student in the year level might be focusing on the exact same spelling pattern, morphological rule, or syllable type. To extend advanced students, the program shifts focus from simple recall to advanced linguistic application and analysis.

Morphological Exploration: If the class is learning a base word or prefix, extended students dig into etymology (word origins) and complex morphology. For example, while the class builds simple words with the prefix sub- (like subway), extended students explore how sub- morphs into “assimilated prefixes” in words like suffix, suggest, or support, analysing how the spelling rules adapt.

Dictation & Orthographic Complexity: Extended students are given vocabulary of a much higher tier that utilises the same phonetic or morphological rule. Their dictation sentences are more syntactically complex, requiring them to juggle advanced vocabulary, punctuation, and grammar rules simultaneously.

Reciprocal Application: Extended students move very rapidly past decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) into high-level writing application. They are challenged to use the targeted linguistic structures to construct complex paragraphs, analyse author choices, or explain the structural logic of the language to peers.
Oxford Maths is explicitly famous for its three-tiered differentiation structure (Working Towards, On Track, and Above Level) backed by a “gradual release of responsibility” framework.

Pre-Testing for Pathway Mapping: At the start of every single topic, students take a pre-test. If a student shows mastery of the core concept, they don’t sit through repetitive instruction. The Teacher Dashboard maps them directly onto the “Above Level” pathway for that specific unit.

Low-Floor, High-Ceiling Tasks: Advanced students work on the same mathematical concept as the rest of the class, but the complexity of the problem changes. While the class might practice a standard algorithm, extended students are given non-routine, multi-step word problems or investigations that require non-linear thinking.

The “Mastery” Focus (Depth over Acceleration): Instead of learning next year’s formulas, students are asked to look at the current concept from multiple angles. They might be asked to prove why a mathematical strategy works, find multiple pathways to the same answer, or identify and explain algebraic patterns hidden within a geometric problem.
Both programs (iDeaL and Oxford Maths) operate on the belief that extension isn’t about more work or faster work; it’s about deeper work. By keeping advanced students on the same year-level scope, they remain an active part of the classroom community while building a rock-solid, sophisticated foundation.
Other curriculum areas
Integrating a school-wide scope and sequence across other curriculum areas, like Science, Social Sciences and the Arts follows this exact same philosophy. The entire class explores the same rich, conceptual theme, but advanced students are extended by shifting how they interact with the content.
Instead of memorising more facts, they are pushed into critical analysis, authentic problem-solving and synthesis. This may be through further projects based learning, independent tasks or additional homework (because they love it or are particularly interested in learning more).
The “Same Destination, Different Depth” Approach: By structuring the curriculum this way, the classroom remains collaborative. All students can sit together and discuss the core topic of the day, but the depth of text, the complexity of the thinking, and the sophistication of the final product are tailored to challenge those who need it.
