Promoting 21st Century learning in our Kura, with an emphasis on our Pillars of Learning.
Our Local Curriculum – Ngā Kaitiaki o Āpōpō
(Guardians of the Future)
Our local curriculum is a dynamic and evolving framework, thoughtfully designed to adapt and grow alongside our ākonga and the ever-changing world they are preparing to lead. It reflects our commitment to responsive, future-focused education that meets the diverse needs of our learners.
Grounded in the principle of kaitiakitanga—the Māori concept of guardianship—our curriculum embraces the responsibility of caring for the environment, community, and one another. A kaitiaki is a protector of the sky, sea, and land, honouring those who came before us while safeguarding the future for generations to come.
Ngā Kaitiaki o Āpōpō is structured as a progression-based model, ensuring that as students move through each year level, they engage with increasingly complex ideas and learning opportunities. This approach fosters deep, sustained growth and prepares our learners to be thoughtful, capable, and empowered future guardians.

Mathematics at Ponsonby Primary
At Ponsonby Primary, we view mathematics as more than just working with numbers—it’s a way of thinking, exploring patterns, solving problems, and making sense of the world around us. Our mathematics programme is structured around three core strands: Number and Algebra, Geometry and Measurement, and Statistics. Through these areas, students develop key competencies such as reasoning, problem-solving, and making meaningful connections.
We take a hands-on, interactive approach to teaching mathematics to ensure all learners are engaged, challenged, and supported. Learning experiences are designed to be varied and inclusive, combining whole-class discussions, small-group workshops, and independent tasks that cater to different learning styles and needs. Students use concrete materials, engage in real-world problem-solving, and work with choice boards that encourage ownership of their learning.
Collaboration is a central feature of our maths programme. Students are encouraged to share strategies, articulate their thinking, and learn from one another. We integrate games, investigations, and real-life contexts to make mathematics relevant and engaging. Our focus is on building deep understanding, rather than rote memorisation, to help students develop a strong conceptual foundation and confidence in applying their skills.
By fostering a positive mindset towards mathematics, we empower our students to embrace challenges, think creatively, and apply their learning in meaningful, real-world ways.

Literacy at Ponsonby Primary
At Ponsonby Primary, we believe literacy is the foundation for meaningful communication—enabling students to understand the ideas of others and to express their own with clarity and confidence. Our literacy programme provides explicit instruction across the key areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
We implement a Structured Literacy approach school-wide, with a particular focus on spelling through the Learning Matters iDeaL platform. All students participate in daily spelling sessions that provide direct teaching of spelling rules, irregular words (those that do not follow standard patterns), and vocabulary development.
Our approach to literacy is varied, responsive, and grounded in practices that support and empower every learner. We foster a reflective learning environment where students are encouraged to set goals, track their progress, and engage in regular check-ins with peers and teachers. This ensures each student is supported on their individual literacy journey while building confidence, independence, and a strong foundation for future learning.

BYOC at Ponsonby Primary
Every school approaches BYOC (Bring Your Own Chromebook) differently, and at Ponsonby Primary, our approach is proving highly effective. This was particularly evident during the COVID-19 period, where our digital learning platform stood out as one of the most effective among primary schools—something strongly affirmed through feedback from our school community.
We implement a gradual digital progression from Year 3 to Year 6, equipping students with the skills they need to thrive as capable, responsible 21st-century learners. Our programme focuses on developing digital fluency and confidence over time, aligned with students' readiness and learning needs.
To ensure a safe online environment, we work in partnership with Linewize, providing robust digital safety measures and promoting responsible online behaviour.
Importantly, we teach our students to use technology as a tool for creation, collaboration, and critical thinking, rather than passive consumption. Digital citizenship is a core focus, helping learners understand their responsibilities and rights in a connected world.

STEAM Education and 21st-Century Skills: Preparing Learners for the Future
In an ever-changing global landscape, STEAM education—encompassing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics—is a vital component of future-focused learning. At Ponsonby Primary, we recognise the importance of equipping our students with the critical skills needed for success in the 21st century, including creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, and digital literacy.
Through hands-on projects, interdisciplinary learning, and real-world applications, students develop the capacity to think critically and innovatively while building resilience and adaptability. STEAM learning is seamlessly integrated across our local curriculum, empowering students to become confident lifelong learners and globally aware citizens.
In 2024, we proudly launched our school Makerspace—a purpose-built, collaborative learning environment designed to inspire exploration, creativity, and innovation. Equipped with a wide range of tools and materials, the Makerspace provides students with weekly opportunities to engage in hands-on, inquiry-based learning. It serves as a hub where curiosity is encouraged, challenges are embraced, and students learn by doing.
This initiative reflects our commitment to nurturing not only academic excellence but also the creative and critical capabilities that will prepare our students for the opportunities and challenges of the future.

Celebrating Visual Arts at Ponsonby Primary
Visual arts hold a valued and longstanding place in our kura, and this is reflected in the vibrant displays of student artwork throughout our school environment. Every second year, we proudly host a school-wide Art Exhibition, transforming our hall into a gallery that showcases the creativity and learning of our ākonga.
This special event is a celebration of the visual arts curriculum, providing every student with the opportunity to exhibit a piece of their work. The exhibition highlights a diverse range of media, techniques, and artistic processes explored within classroom programmes.
The event opens with a community evening on Thursday, where whānau and friends are invited to view and appreciate the artworks on display. The exhibition remains open through to Saturday morning, ensuring all members of our school community have the chance to enjoy and celebrate the creative achievements of our students.

Performing Arts at Ponsonby Primary
At Ponsonby Primary, we value the performing arts as a powerful way for students to express themselves, build confidence, and connect with others. Whether performing in the classroom, at a school assembly, or for the wider community, our students are regularly encouraged to take the stage and share their talents.
As part of our Thursday enrichment programme, students in Years 3–6 have the opportunity to participate in choir and dance, while our junior students enjoy weekly group singing sessions every Friday, fostering a love of music from an early age.
A major highlight in our arts calendar is the biennial whole-school production. In 2024, our students delivered a spectacular performance of Moana Jr at the Victory Convention Centre—a vibrant showcase of singing, dancing, and drama that was met with outstanding community feedback.
In addition, students have access to a range of co-curricular opportunities through external providers, including instrumental music lessons and public speaking programmes—all delivered on-site during school hours by experienced tutors.
Through these opportunities, we nurture creativity, collaboration, and self-expression—ensuring the performing arts are an integral part of the Ponsonby Primary experience.

Sports at Ponsonby Primary

Our aim is to foster a love of sport, promote physical wellbeing, and encourage active lifestyles for all students.
We are proud of our strong emphasis on fair play and sportsmanship. Both students and parents are expected to uphold our school's code of conduct when representing Ponsonby Primary in any sporting context, ensuring a respectful and positive environment for all involved.
All students are encouraged to get involved in sport, regardless of experience or skill level. Our inclusive approach ensures that every child has the opportunity to try new activities, develop their abilities, and enjoy the benefits of being part of a team.

Kapa Haka at Ponsonby Primary
At Ponsonby Primary School, our Kapa Haka rōpū is open to students in Years 4 to 6 and holds a significant place within our school community. It reflects our deep commitment to honouring and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Aotearoa New Zealand, and to upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Through Kapa Haka, we foster a strong sense of belonging, pride, and unity among our ākonga. Participation in the group builds confidence, encourages leadership, and strengthens students’ understanding of tikanga Māori and te reo Māori.
Our rōpū regularly performs at school and community events, showcasing the talent, dedication, and collaborative spirit of our tamariki. Kapa Haka is an integral part of our school’s identity—supporting cultural connectedness, celebrating diversity, and reinforcing our shared values as a learning community.
As our students progress through their learning journey at our school, we hope that they will gain the confidence and adaptability that goes beyond traditional academics, helping them navigate future challenges, as well as preparing them to contribute positively to their communities and beyond.
